Dr. Porsche started out engineering for other auto makers like Daimler. He also started his own engineering service company. His client were VW, Autounion(became Audi), Germany(Hitler then) etc. Porsche would give new project with numbers. 1st one was type7, since they did not want to let client think they were the 1st. That is our body type 911 was born. It was actually type 901 but Peugeot claimed that X0X is their identity, so although it was announced as 901, Porsche slipped 1 in the middle. The body number and part number used internally and with dealers, 901 number still remains. The one of famous big bumper Porsche is known as 930 Turbo shown here. It is actually a body type 930 and there are 934, 935 which are famous too. Latest number I know is the latest 911 which is type 997. I wonder what they will use when they ran out three digit. Porsche 1030 Hybrid Turbo perhaps? Does not sounds right. I want nine to start with.
