He made roughly one tombo each day changing little shapes to see what happens.  Resulted in roughly 600 Tombos by the time he passed away.  "I love making them and did not think it'd last this long.  The little variant while creating it effects the result so large, this try and error part is so fun.  If I could foresee the result then it is just like making any mass production parts hence no fun."

我ら竹とんぼ奇(貴)族。
ぼくは竹とんぼ作って楽しんでいる。まさかこんなに続くとは思わなかった。こうすればこうなる。この技術はここで使えばよい。これで作ればこんな形になる等々わかるまでが楽しいのだ。わかってしまった後、それを作ることは、ある意味で苦痛になる。
なぜならば、それ以降は創造ではなく、おおげさに言えば工業製品を作るのと変わらない。作りながら考え、考えながらつくる、この楽しみは他のものには変え難い。
竹とんぼをいまだに作り続けているのは、まだ行きつく先が見えないからだと思う。
